Home Learning in Year 1

Our Year 1 class is called Bluebell Class – named after inspiration from the beautiful book, The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane.

Curriculum Learning

In Bluebell Class we are learning about lots of exciting times in the past.  We love learning about transport and how it has changed.  Our Geography curriculum is also full of interest as we learn about the similarities and differences between Cleethorpes and Hull and much more!  Later in the year we will explore how animals can live in different habitats.

Each week children will bring home their home learning book.  This will have a half termly menu with plenty of choice of learning tasks.  These will range from creative tasks such as draw George Stephenson’s Rocket, to discussion tasks e.g. tell your parents 5 things that you have learnt about materials.  In addition to this, feel free to undertake your own ideas.

Phonics

Year 1 have daily phonics sessions, following the Little Wandle phonics scheme.

This is a whole class session where the children review known phonemes/graphemes then use these sounds to practise reading words. They then learn new graphemes and practise reading and spelling words which contain the new grapheme. This promotes recognition of the sounds and aids fluency when reading.

Reading at Home

Supporting reading by hearing your child read 5 times a week is invaluable.  Practising reading is crucial to becoming a fluent reader.  We ask that children read their school reading book 5 times a week and these reads can all be recorded in the child’s reading record.  Certificates will be awarded at 25, 50, 75 reads and above. When 100 or 200 reads are reached, in addition to a certificate, children will receive a token for RORY.  RORY, our reading vending machine, is full of great books that the children can choose from when they insert their token.

We also encourage the children to read a range of the following:  Little Wandle reading books, Lexia, library books and their own choice of book/magazine/guidebook etc.  This will help to develop a love of books and reading.

Maths

Children will benefit from practising maths skills on Numbots  a great, fun APP that aids recall of facts.  Other tasks will be sent in home learning books to be completed during the half term.

PE

Please ensure that children bring the correct full outdoor/indoor PE kit. Long hair should be tied back please and children should have no earrings in for PE due to health and safety.  Please LABEL ALL uniform and PE kit items.

Each week the children will be set homework.

  • Each half term home-learning will be assigned in connection to the main topic (History, Geography, Religious Education, Art, Design and Technology) or Science recall activity. Knowledge Organisers will be provided to aid the completion of the learning challenges.
  • Please aim to read five times a week. This really helps children to practise their reading skills.
  • Children all have a TT Rock Stars account. This game style platform encourages children to learn to recall times tables in a fun way.  We would love it if children can practise at home whenever they have a little spare time.
